My academic journey began with a background in Earth Sciences and Molecular Biology from the University of Fribourg, driven by a desire to integrate these fields. I pursued my doctoral studies in environmental microbiology at ETH Zurich, where I developed expertise in combining fieldwork, wet-lab techniques, and bioinformatics to study the resistance and resilience of microbial communities in periglacial soils.
After completing my Ph.D., I broadened my research focus to include various applications of microbiomics. I conducted postdoctoral work at Agroscope on cheese microbiomes and at the University Hospital in Basel on clinical microbiomics. I then joined the Institute of Medical Microbiology at the University of Zurich, where I helped clinical research groups uncover important correlations between the microbiome and diseases, drug efficacy, and side effects.
As part of the co-founding team of PharmaBiome AG, I bring over 12 years of experience in microbiomics, gained in both academic and accredited clinical settings.
Dr. Matthias Dreier
Co-founder and CTO
As Co-founder and Chief Technology Officer, I oversee the management and optimization of our bioinformatics and cloud computing infrastructure.

With a strong foundation in bioinformatics, I bring both ambition and dedication to advancing the field. My academic journey began with a Master’s degree in Molecular Life Sciences, specializing in Biochemistry, from the University of Bern. This comprehensive training equipped me with deep expertise in cell biology and biochemistry. I further honed my skills during my Ph.D. at the University of Neuchâtel, where I developed SpeciesPrimer, an innovative PCR primer design pipeline, now available on GitHub, that significantly simplifies the design process for quantitative PCR primers targeting bacteria.
In recent years, my professional focus has expanded into microbiome research, particularly in the context of cheese microbiology at Agroscope. Here, I have developed several bioinformatics tools and gained extensive experience in reproducible data analysis.
My mission is to enhance the efficiency of data analysis for scientists, removing technical barriers so they can focus on advancing their research.
